PM Chairs Meeting on Power Distribution Companies Privatization

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared the privatization of loss-making state-owned enterprises as the government’s top priority, following the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines. The move aims to reduce financial losses and improve efficiency across key sectors. In the middle of this policy shift, power distribution companies privatization has emerged as the next major step.

A high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was held to review matters related to the Privatization Commission. Federal ministers, the Prime Minister’s adviser on privatization, the chairman of the Privatization Commission, and senior officials attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the prime minister said that the privatization of the national airline was only the beginning. He stressed that privatizing loss-making state-owned institutions remains one of the government’s main priorities.

The prime minister directed authorities to speed up reforms within the Privatization Commission. He instructed that skilled professionals from the private sector and market should be hired in a transparent manner, and that public relations and marketing departments should be further strengthened.

He also ordered the digitization of the Privatization Commission and third-party audits of all privatization projects by internationally recognized firms. The meeting was informed that power distribution companies privatization will be carried out in two phases, starting with IESCO, GEPCO, and FESCO, followed by HESCO and SEPCO in the second phase.
